Welcome to Into the Clearing Counseling

My vision is to create a therapeutic space that feels safe, welcoming, and inclusive—where you can show up just as you are. I believe in the power of collaboration and the importance of building a relationship rooted in trust, respect, and care.

Together, we’ll work to gently cultivate a space where you can begin to view yourself and your life with greater self-compassion and self-acceptance. My goal is to support and empower you as you move toward the goals that matter most to you—at your own pace, in your own way.

A Letter from James Spears, MS, LMHC, NCC

Founder and Therapist,

Into the Clearing Counseling

Hello and welcome!  My name is James.  I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Nationally Certified Counselor, and Licensed Educator, based in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Upon graduating with my Master of Science degree in School Counseling, I began my counseling career as a school counselor.  I spent seven years working as a school counselor.  While I enjoyed working with students, I gradually came to understand that I also loved working with the adults who supported those students, and that, ultimately, I wanted to shift my professional focus towards supporting adults.  I also realized that, in general, I wanted to give more time and extended focus to the people with whom I work.

In 2022, as a result of these emerging self-discoveries, I left my school counseling position at the end of my seventh and final school year, and I joined a collaborative practice as a therapist.  Later in 2022, I became a fully Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and continued working as a therapist, providing support to an ever-growing and highly diverse collection of clients, all while gaining valuable experience in regards to better understanding and treating a variety of mental health disorders and issues.

In 2024, I was still very much enjoying working in the collaborative practice; however, I was also becoming increasingly aware of my growing desire to branch out and start my own practice.  This desire continued to intensify, and finally, in the fall of 2024, I officially took my next professional step forward and founded my own practice, Into the Clearing Counseling.

Since beginning my own practice, I have continued to wholeheartedly strive towards providing therapy that is deeply meaningful and highly effective.  As a husband, father, therapist, and as a client actively engaged in my own therapy, I understand how powerful it can be to seek clarity within yourself—and how deeply that clarity can transform the relationships and experiences that shape your life. I bring not only professional training, but also personal insight and a deep respect for each person’s unique journey.  I believe that real, lasting change begins within the safety of a supportive therapeutic relationship.  That connection forms the foundation for growth, healing, and meaningful transformation.

No matter where you are on your path, I will meet you there—with compassion, honesty, and a commitment to walking alongside you every step of the way.  If this letter and/or website resonates with you in any way, I encourage you to reach out, and ask how I might be able to provide further support.  Thank you for reading, and I hope to hear from you!

—James

About James:  Outside the Office

When I’m not working, I cherish spending quality time with my wife and our two children. I feel most grounded when I’m outdoors—running, walking, or simply enjoying the sunshine and the rhythm of nature. I also find relaxation and inspiration in music, reading, writing, and watching a good basketball or football game. These moments help me recharge and stay connected to what brings me joy and balance.

We might be a good fit if...

You are seeking to work with someone who utilizes more of a non-directive approach to therapy.  I connect best with clients who really want freer reign when it comes to exploring the issues and challenges that get in the way of living a more meaningful and fulfilling life, and as a result, desire more independence in regards to crafting and guiding the content of each therapy session.  With that said, I also completely understand that there may be moments in which you are unsure about taking the lead of the conversation.  In those moments, please know that I am happy and fully prepared to be more direct, and guide along our work together.

Additionally, we might be a good fit if you are a deep thinker, and someone who truly has the desire and is willing to take the time to listen to yourself, and better understand yourself.  I connect best with clients who very regularly want to put the time and effort into exploring their thoughts, emotions, and experiences, and, in turn, work hard to change maladaptive patterns of behavior into more adaptive and advantageous patterns of behavior that, ultimately, promote self-confidence and self-growth.
